The 12th Ake Arts and Books Festival kicked off yesterday November 21, 2024, in Lagos, showcasing the richness of African literature, art, and culture. The festival which features writers, artists, and thinkers from across the globe, had notable attendees including Abdulkareem Baba-Aminu, Joey Akan, Tonye Faloughi-Ekezie, and Jordan Ifueko among others.

This year’s theme, Finding Freedom, examines the universal quest for freedom and breaking limitations.

At the event, Children’s literature took centre stage during a book chat with Bunmi Emenanjo and Tonye Faloughi-Ekezie, moderated by Olubunmi Aboderin Talabi.

In a conversation with Abdulkareem Baba-Aminu, the celebrated illustrator and cartoonist emphasised the power of art as a tool for social change. He noted that illustrations are vital for reaching audiences and shaping narratives, likening their importance to early cave paintings that documented human existence.

Festival organizer and author Lola Shoneyin continues to provide a platform for creatives to connect and collaborate. Gloria Okwu, a breast cancer survivor, also lent her voice to the event, advocating for better awareness and support for cancer survivors.
