Albinism Association Urges National Action Plan and Health Coverage

The Albinism Association of Nigeria, AAN, has called on the Federal Government to develop a national policy framework for persons with albinism, while also demanding full implementation of disability laws.

Speaking at a media roundtable in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Executive Director Mrs Bisi Bamishe highlighted widespread discrimination faced by people with albinism, particularly in employment and healthcare.

She urged the inclusion of skin cancer treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, noting it as a critical health need for the community.

Mrs Bamishe also pressed government officials to honour Nigeria’s commitments made at the upcoming Global Disability Summit, GDS, 2025.

According to her, persons with albinism have made progress in education, employment, and healthcare through advocacy and awareness, but require stronger institutional support.

She appealed to the public to actively reject discrimination in all forms.
