Residents living near Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri have called for its immediate relocation, citing persistent threats to their safety.
At a press briefing in the Borno State capital, community leaders expressed deep concern following last month’s explosion at the military armory within the facility. Though no casualties were reported, the blast caused extensive damage and renewed fears among locals.

Chairman of the Galtimari Consultative Forum, Zannah Boguma, noted that Giwa Barracks has repeatedly been targeted by Boko Haram militants seeking to free detained insurgents, with major attacks recorded in 2014, 2015, and 2019.
Residents argue that hosting such a high-risk military installation in a densely populated civilian area exposes over a million people to danger.
They urged the Federal Government to relocate the facility to a safer, more strategic location outside Maiduguri for public safety and operational effectiveness.
