The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has denied claims that Nigeria is sliding into a one-party state under the current administration. Speaking on a TV interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, he dismissed allegations of state-backed intimidation of opposition figures, pointing instead to what he described as internal weaknesses within rival parties.
His comments followed a major defection in Delta State, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy, Monday Onyeme, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa joined the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party, along with commissioners and other stakeholders. Basiru said the development reflects the APC’s growing strength and strategic grassroots mobilisation across Nigeria.

He challenged the media to assess the activity levels of other political parties and contrasted this with what he called the APC’s focused effort to build effective structures in every ward, council, and state. He said the ruling party’s resilience while in opposition should serve as a lesson to others.
In response to claims of political harassment, Basiru cited African revolutionary AmÃlcar Cabral, saying opposition parties must avoid self-deception and take responsibility for their decline.
