President Bola Tinubu has called on world leaders to show unity, courage and sustained commitment in tackling the worsening global climate crisis. He spoke at a virtual high-level meeting hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as part of efforts to raise global climate ambition ahead of COP30 in Brazil.
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2060, highlighting the country’s $410 billion Energy Transition Plan targeting five key sectors: power, cooking, transport, oil and gas, and industry. He also announced the finalisation of a national carbon market policy in March, expected to unlock up to $2.5 billion in funding by 2030.

The president added that Nigeria is updating its nationally determined contributions under the UN climate framework and developing a global climate investment fund to attract green finance and de-risk clean energy projects.
UN Secretary-General Guterres called for greater ambition from world leaders, urging them to submit stronger climate plans before COP30 and scale up support for developing nations. He reiterated calls for $40 billion in annual adaptation finance by 2025 and $1.3 trillion per year by 2035 to aid climate efforts globally.
