At least 31 people have been killed and dozens wounded after a powerful explosion struck a Shia mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital. The blast happened on Friday during prayers at the Khadija Tul Kubra mosque in the Tarlai Kalan area of southeastern Islamabad.
A senior police official said the explosion appeared to be a suicide attack, although investigations are ongoing to confirm the cause. Security sources told AFP the attacker detonated himself after being stopped at the mosque’s entrance.
Islamabad authorities said 169 people were taken to hospital after rescue teams reached the scene, with footage showing extensive damage inside the mosque. Medical officials reported that adults and children were among those injured.
