Four security officers killed as Imran Khan supporters storm Islamabad

Four security personnel have been killed as supporters of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan forced their way into the capital, Islamabad. Thousands of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party members defied a police lockdown, breaking through barricades and tear gas to demand his release ahead of a court hearing on terrorism charges.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the protests, labelling them “extremism” rather than peaceful demonstrations. His office confirmed that the four security officials were killed when a vehicle rammed into them during the unrest. Reports also suggest a civilian and a police officer may have died in separate incidents, though these remain unconfirmed.

The protest followed two days of clashes as PTI supporters advanced towards the capital, despite a two-month ban on public gatherings imposed last week. The government has threatened a forceful response, but tensions continue to escalate.
