Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have condemned Saturday’s local government elections in Rivers State, describing it as a travesty of democracy. Both opposition leaders asserted that the electoral exercise was unlawful and undermined democratic principles.
Mr. Abubakar in an X post asserted that the election represents an “awful absurdity” and signaled a dangerous curve under the Tinubu administration. He urged opposition parties in the state to reject the election results, maintaining that the body that conducted the polls lacks legal legitimacy.

On his part, Peter Obi described the election as an unconstitutional assault on democracy, calling it “rascality taken too far.” He argued that an illegally appointed sole administrator cannot legitimately conduct elections meant to empower the people, describing the process as a desecration of democracy’s foundation.
Both leaders warned that such actions threaten governance at its most fundamental level and undermine the rule of law. They emphasized the need to protect the sanctity of the ballot and ensure that leadership emerges from the people’s mandate rather than undemocratic processes.
