Ballon d’Or Ceremony Set for September 22, as Equality Takes Center Stage

Ballon d’Or Ceremony Set for September 22, as Equality Takes Center Stage

For the first time in its history, the prestigious Ballon d’Or awards will feature an equal number of prizes for both women and men. Organisers announced on Monday that the 2024 ceremony, scheduled for September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, will introduce three new women’s categories.

The additions include awards for the best women’s goalkeeper, best young women’s player, and top women’s goal-scorer—whether in club football or international competition. This change brings the total to six awards each for men and women, with the Socrates Award—recognising humanitarian efforts—remaining open to all genders.

According to a joint statement from ‘France Football’ magazine and UEFA, “It’s a significant step toward recognising excellence in women’s football on the same scale as the men’s”. Nominees for the various categories will be revealed in early August.

Last year’s edition was marred by controversy after Real Madrid boycotted the ceremony, following the decision to award the men’s prize to Manchester City’s Rodri instead of Vinicius Junior. Organisers are hoping the expanded and balanced award list will help restore credibility and enthusiasm for the ceremony.
