Blast Kills At Least 13 People in Burundi

At least 13 civilians have been killed, and 57 others injured after ammunition exploded at a military base in Burundi’s economic capital, Bujumbura. The country’s army said the blast was caused by an electrical short circuit at the facility on Tuesday night.

Army spokesperson General Gaspard Baratuza said houses, vehicles and military equipment were destroyed in the explosion at the National Defence Force ammunition depot in the Musaga area. He added that three soldiers were among the injured.

The arsenal is located in a densely populated neighbourhood adjoining a military training institute. Authorities have urged residents to report any unexploded munitions and avoid handling suspicious objects as investigations continue.
