The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the death of one person following a bomb explosion at Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area. The blast, caused by an Improvised Explosive Device, occurred on Tuesday and injured five others.
The victim, a middle-aged woman identified as Ngozi Umeh, reportedly stepped on a landmine suspected to have been planted by members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network. She later died in hospital from her injuries, while others are receiving medical treatment.

In response, Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma deployed specialised teams, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and tactical squads, to sweep the area. Police have since declared the market safe and resumed normal operations under increased security.
The state’s Criminal Investigation Department has been tasked with leading a full investigation. The commissioner extended condolences to the victim’s family and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminal threats across Imo State.
