CAF Fines Motsepe’s Mamelodi Sundowns Over Fan Violence

The Confederation of African Football has fined Mamelodi Sundowns $100,000 for breaching safety and security regulations during a CAF Champions League match earlier this month. The South African club is owned by CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who was recently re-elected unopposed for a second term.

Violent clashes broke out between fans during the first-leg quarterfinal tie against Tunisia’s Esperance on April 1 in Pretoria. CAF announced the sanctions in a disciplinary ruling on Thursday, also fining Esperance $150,000 for related misconduct.

The governing body has warned Sundowns to strictly adhere to safety guidelines in future fixtures. Both clubs are among four African teams set to feature at the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this June.

Sundowns have been drawn in a group alongside Borussia Dortmund, Fluminense and Ulsan Hyundai, while Esperance will face Chelsea, Flamengo and a yet-to-be-named opponent. Matches are scheduled across major U.S. cities including Orlando, Miami, Philadelphia and Nashville.
