Nigerian media entrepreneur and television host, Mr Chude Jideonwo, has spoken publicly about living with Tourette syndrome, describing the condition as one that can make the body feel out of control. Mr Jideonwo made the disclosure during an interview with BBC News Africa, where he also highlighted the stigma associated with the neurological disorder in Africa.
Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by involuntary movements and sounds known as tics. Mr Chude Jideonwo said he became more aware of the symptoms in his late twenties, noting that the condition can affect both physical movement and speech, although he described his case as mild.
Mr Chude Jideonwo also explained that managing the condition requires conscious effort, especially in public settings, where he sometimes suppresses symptoms. He added that speaking openly about the condition can help reduce embarrassment and improve public understanding of the disorder.

The media personality further criticised the portrayal of Tourette syndrome in Nigerian films, saying it often reinforces harmful stereotypes. Mr Chude Jideonwo said he was encouraged to speak out after seeing international figures such as singer Billie Eilish share their experiences, adding that increased awareness is essential to reducing stigma and supporting those living with the condition.
