Clamp Down On Marketers Hoarding Petrol, Reps Tell Security Agencies

The House of Representatives Committees on Petroleum Resources, Downstream and Midstream, have called on the  security agencies to go after fuel marketers hoarding petrol and engaging in the arbitrary increase in the price of the  commodity.

In a statement on Wednesday, the  lawmakers say they reached out to the  the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NWDPRA, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, PETROAN, and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO to mention a few.

According to the legislators, the scarcity isn’t caused by a lack of product, as Nigeria has in its storage facilities at least 1.5 billion litres of petrol that can last for 30 days.

The lawmakers, Ikenga Ugochinyere and Henry Okojie, say the scarcity is as a result of logistics challenges ranging from difficulty experienced in transporting products from the mother vessels to onshore to movement of products with marine shuttle vessels and disruption in the Escravos channels.

The lawmakers also accused some stakeholders of economic sabotage and asked security agencies to clamp down on them.
