Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu has been named Acting Regional Director for Africa at the World Health Organization, WHO. His appointment was confirmed on Tuesday during the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board in Geneva.
Dr. Ihekweazu, a former Director-General of Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, currently serves as WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Health Emergency Intelligence, a role he assumed in 2021.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed confidence in Ihekweazu’s leadership, stating that Africa’s health sector remains in capable hands for the next four months.
Trained as an infectious disease epidemiologist, Dr. Ihekweazu brings over two decades of experience from key public health institutions, including Germany’s Robert Koch Institute and the UK’s Health Protection Agency.
He succeeds Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who has completed her tenure as Regional Director.
