Alexandra Eala made history by becoming the first Filipina to win a WTA Tour singles title after defeating top-seeded Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the Mubadala DC Open final.
The championship match resumed on Monday after heavy rain suspended play on Sunday with Eala leading 2-1 in the second set. The 21-year-old completed a remarkable comeback, winning the final eight games to secure the biggest title of her career at the WTA 500 event.
Eala’s run included victories over the tournament’s top three seeds, underlining her breakthrough performance ahead of the U.S. Open.
