Emir of Kano calls for national tech policy framework

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for an urgent national strategy and policy framework to guide the development of artificial intelligence in Nigeria. He made the call on Tuesday at the 8th Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Kano.

Sanusi said Nigeria must prepare for emerging technologies to achieve sustainable development, warning that the country risks falling behind others such as Ghana, which has already begun implementing AI strategies focused on youth development and economic growth. He urged universities to take the lead in developing a national roadmap for artificial intelligence.

The monarch also stressed the role of academic institutions in shaping national policy, noting that universities must go beyond teaching and research to contribute to governance, science and technology. He warned that weak academic engagement could undermine civil society and national development.
