Ex-CCT chairman Danladi Umar granted ₦100 million bail

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted ₦100 million bail to Danladi Umar, former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, who is facing four corruption charges brought by the EFCC.

Justice Peter Kekemeke ordered Umar to provide one surety possessing a valid Certificate of Occupancy in Abuja. The EFCC alleges Umar funnelled roughly ₦15.5 million from contractors awarded tribunal projects into accounts belonging to his wife, and had contractors pay his children’s university tuition fees, in exchange for undue advantage while serving as CCT chairman and head of its Tenders Board.

Umar pleaded not guilty to all counts. His lawyer argued he had honoured every EFCC invitation and never absconded; prosecutors opposed bail, calling him a flight risk who could interfere with witnesses. The judge ruled the prosecution failed to prove either claim.

Umar remains at Kuje Correctional Centre pending his bail conditions. Trial resumes October 29. Umar previously chaired the tribunal that convicted ex-Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen in 2019 and once heard a since-dismissed case against President Tinubu over undeclared foreign accounts.
