FAAN Firefighters Reject Online Training, Warn of Aviation Safety Risks

Airport firefighters under the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have rejected a proposed online basic firefighting training programme for staff of the agency. The firefighters, under the Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association, say the plan could compromise aviation safety standards.

The association is opposing a proposal by FAAN to introduce a four-week online course followed by two weeks of practical training for more than 200 airport firefighters across the country. The firefighters say aviation firefighting requires intensive hands-on training and cannot be effectively delivered through virtual learning.

The association also says the proposal does not align with global aviation safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority. It notes that airport rescue and firefighting training must include practical exercises, aircraft rescue operations and live fire simulations.

The firefighters have therefore called on FAAN to cancel the online programme and organise full physical training for the personnel. They also advised that the over 200 firefighters scheduled for the course should be trained in batches if logistics make it difficult to train them at the same time.
