The Federal Government has temporarily opened Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, a 47-kilometre stretch from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction to the Eleko village junction. Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced the development in Lagos on Friday, saying the move complies with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ease traffic during the festive period.
Umahi said the partial opening fulfils a promise made during his inspection tour on November 23, where he assured that the section would be accessible to motorists between December 12 and 17. He noted that the measure is expected to improve traffic flow and end the difficulties faced by commuters along the Lekki-Ajah corridor.
The minister explained that the opening will significantly cut travel time and reduce transport costs for road users. He added that the government is working to ensure timely delivery of the remaining parts of the project.

According to Umahi, Section 1 and half of Section 2 are scheduled for completion and commissioning in April 2026, although the bridges under Section 2 will be finalised separately.
