Federal Government Pledges One-Week Passport Delivery

The Federal Government has announced that passports will now be delivered within one week of enrolment, following sweeping reforms in the issuance process.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, speaking at a mid-term performance retreat in Abuja, said the new system would eliminate long delays and corruption that once forced Nigerians to wait months or pay exorbitant fees to fast-track applications.

He explained that a new centralised personalisation centre, the largest in Africa, would boost capacity and ensure faster vetting and stricter security checks. Approval powers have also been removed from passport control officers, who were accused of manipulating the process for personal gain.

The minister said the reforms are designed to restore integrity to Nigeria’s travel documents and ensure passports remain a genuine symbol of national identity.

Officials say the changes will curb racketeering and safeguard security.
