FG Plans Civilian De-mining Teams to Tackle IED Threat

Nigeria's Defence Chief Calls for Greater Civic Support in Combating Terrorism

The Federal Government says it plans to establish civilian de-mining teams to address the growing threat of improvised explosive devices across the country. Minister of Defence Christopher Musa disclosed this on Tuesday at a mine action stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja.

He said the proposed teams will include retired military personnel, security veterans, youths and medical professionals, and will support knowledge transfer and community engagement in affected areas. Musa noted that the initiative aims to improve mine clearance efforts while building local capacity.

The minister warned that anti-personnel mines and improvised explosive devices remain a serious humanitarian and security concern, particularly in areas affected by insurgency, where civilians continue to face risks. He added that public awareness and education are critical to improving safety and response.

Musa also said the National Mine Action Centre will coordinate clearance operations, accredit operators and maintain standards, while international partners, including the United Nations Mines Action Service, continue to support Nigeria with training and equipment for disposal operations.
