FG Says Planned NLC Strike Illegal, Against Court Order

The Federal Government has asked the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to shelve its planned nationwide strike.

In a statement signed by the Solicitor-General of the Federation & Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, the government noted that it had earlier secured an order from the National Industrial Court in Abuja.

The order restrains labour from embarking on any strike action over issues bordering on the removal of fuel subsidy, hike in petrol prices and the consequential increase in cost of living until the determination of the suit.

The statement also added that the NLC has submitted to the jurisdiction of the court and is being represented by the reputable law firm of Femi Falana, SAN.

The government urged the NLC to withdraw its 7-day strike notice if demands of the unions are not met.

It insists that the strike action would amount to self-help since the matter is already pending in court.
