Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegations of financial misconduct amounting to N700 billion.
Mr Emmanuel was taken into custody at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday after honouring an invitation linked to accusations of money laundering, fund diversion, and theft. The allegations were brought forward by the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking, NACAT, a civil society group.

The petition claims Mr Emmanuel received N3 trillion from the Federation Account during his tenure but left behind a debt of N500 billion and unfinished projects worth N300 billion.
In January, NACAT had called for an investigation into the former governor’s administration. His aides have previously dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and without merit.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
