Former Chief Justice of Nigeria Mohammed Uwais dies at 89

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, has died at the age of 89. His family confirmed that he passed away on Friday in Abuja. Born on June 12, 1936, Justice Uwais led the Supreme Court from 1995 until his retirement in 2006.

He also chaired Nigeria’s Electoral Reform Committee under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. His work on electoral reforms and judicial integrity was widely respected.

Justice Uwais began his legal career after graduating from the University of London and being called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1963. He served as a judge in Kaduna State, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, and a Justice of the Supreme Court before becoming Chief Justice.

Beyond Nigeria, Uwais contributed to legal systems globally, serving as the Honorary President of the World Jurist Association and a member of the Commonwealth inquiry commission in Sri Lanka. His legacy as a jurist and reform advocate remains significant in Nigeria’s legal history.
