At least 40 migrants, including infants, have died after their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia near the port city of Mahdia. Officials say about 70 people were on board when the vessel went down in one of the deadliest incidents this year.
All those on board were from sub-Saharan Africa. Tunisian authorities say around 30 people were rescued, while an investigation has been launched into the cause of the sinking.

The tragedy is the latest in a series of disasters involving migrants attempting the perilous Mediterranean crossing to Europe. The UN says over 2,000 people died last year trying to make the same journey.
Tunisia, under growing pressure to curb irregular migration, signed a $118 million deal with the European Union in 2023 to help stop smuggling and strengthen border control.
