Ghana Demands Compensation for Slavery at UNGA

Ghana is leading a push at the United Nations General Assembly for a resolution to recognise the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity. Member states are expected to vote on the proposal on Wednesday.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the resolution calls for countries to apologise and contribute to a reparations fund. He said the demand is aimed at securing justice for victims and supporting education and development initiatives.

The proposal is backed by the African Union and the Caribbean Community, although some countries, including the United Kingdom, have rejected calls for reparations.

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, an estimated 12 to 15 million Africans were taken to the Americas, with more than two million dying during the journey. Ghana says the resolution also seeks the return of cultural artefacts and highlights the lasting impact of slavery on people of African descent.
