Global Hunger Falls as Food Insecurity Rises in Africa, UN Report Reveals

Global hunger levels declined for the third consecutive year in 2024, according to a new United Nations report, with improved access to food in South America and India helping to offset worsening conditions in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report revealed that 673 million people—around 8.2 percent of the global population—faced hunger last year, down from 8.5 percent in 2023. The report was compiled by five UN agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Food Programme (WFP).

However, the agencies warned that the data focuses on chronic hunger and does not fully account for acute food crises caused by conflicts and other emergencies. One such crisis is in Gaza, where the WHO says malnutrition has reached alarming levels due to Israel’s blockade.

Although Israel partially lifted the blockade in May, only limited aid has since been allowed into the Palestinian territory, prompting continued warnings from the UN and humanitarian groups about the risk of mass starvation.
