The organisers of The Headies have announced that the 18th edition of the award ceremony will be held in Toronto, Canada, with founder Ayo Animashaun breaking the news on Monday evening during a press briefing in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Although specific dates for the ceremony have not yet been disclosed, Animashaun confirmed that travel company Wakanow has come on board as a sponsor to provide a never-before-seen experience from Lagos to Toronto.
Drawing comparisons to global events like the Grammy Awards, Animashaun said international award shows thrive on diverse income streams, including state funding, and that The Headies must adopt similar models to grow beyond sole reliance on sponsorship.
He noted that during the COVID pandemic, the Grammy Awards left Los Angeles for Madison Square in New York because Los Angeles was shut down, and Los Angeles fought to bring the Grammys back because the event does something to their economy and is part of their DNA.
The announcement marks a shift in direction for The Headies, which returned to Nigeria in 2024 after two consecutive years in the United States, with the 16th and 15th editions held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia.
