Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has approved the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence, AI, Division within its Information and Communication Technology Department.
The decision, announced in a statement by National Commissioner Sam Olumekun, follows a review of the growing influence of AI on electoral systems both locally and globally.

Mr Olumekun said the division would help the commission harness AI’s potential while addressing risks such as misinformation and online content manipulation.
The move comes after INEC’s participation in recent continental conferences focused on AI’s role in modern elections. Officials say the new division will support data-driven decision-making, enhance voter service automation, and improve logistical planning using geo-spatial intelligence.
