Nigerian journalist and media activist, Maazi Obinna Oparaku Akuwudike, has been arrested by police in Imo State, sparking fresh concerns about press freedom and political interference.
Obinna was picked up at around 3am on Thursday in Owerri, reportedly in connection with revelations he made during a recent interview on Adeola Fayehun’s YouTube channel.

In the interview, Obinna alleged that Sandra Duru—popularly known as Prof Mgbeke—paid him to produce damaging content targeting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. He claimed he initially saw it as a routine contract but later withdrew, citing concerns over the credibility of Duru’s statements.
His arrest has led to speculation of a wider attempt to silence dissent, particularly as Senator Natasha had earlier accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of misconduct.
The Imo State Police confirmed Obinna’s arrest, stating he was invited over a defamation complaint and failed to honour the summons. Investigations are ongoing.
