The Israeli military has defended the deadly strike on a school where displaced Gazans were living, saying that the complex had become a headquarters for Hamas militants, including some who they claimed also worked for UNRWA, the main United Nations agency in Gaza.

This is as condemnation over the strike mounted on Thursday.

The Palestinian authorities said Wednesday’s airstrike on the place once known as the Al-Jaouni School, killed 18 Gazans, and UNRWA said that among them were six of its employees, including the shelter’s manager, the most UNRWA employees to die in a single strike in Gaza since the war began.

According to UN Officials, about 12,000 displaced people were living in the school buildings. It was the fifth time Israel had bombed the site since the start of its bombardment of the area last year.

Britain’s foreign secretary, David Lammy, on Thursday joined in criticism from the United Nations Secretary-General and others, calling the deaths of the U.N. workers “appalling” and reiterating calls for a cease-fire between Hamas and Israel.
