Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has recused herself from the federal government’s treason and terrorism-related case against the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, which has been ongoing since 2015.

This follows Kanu’s demand that she recuse herself, asserting that her continued handling of the case would be unjust, following her alleged failure to adhere to Supreme Court ruling.

Recall that the federal government had accused Kanu of inciting insurrection against the government and broadcasting threats on the illegal ‘Radio Biafra’, warning anyone who purportedly flouts the sit-at-home orders in the southeast would face consequences.

In a move that surprised many, Justice Nyako agreed and remitted the file to the Chief Judge for further necessary action, stressing that she cannot proceed with a trial where a defendant lacks confidence in the court.
