Labour Party Distances Self from Protest by Abure Group at INEC Headquarters

Supporters of Julius Abure staged a protest at the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Wednesday, accusing INEC of omitting their candidates from upcoming elections. The demonstration targeted the commission’s rejection of candidate lists for the FCT Area Council polls and some National Assembly bye-elections.

Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the group marched around the INEC premises under police watch. Placards bore messages such as “INEC should respect the rule of law” and “Supreme Court judgement favours Julius Abure.” Recall that, INEC recently rejected the submission from Abure’s camp, citing a Supreme Court ruling that ended his chairmanship in June 2023.

However, the Labour Party leadership has distanced itself from the protest. In a statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, aide to Interim Chairman Nenadi Usman, the party described the demonstrators as impostors and stated that the protest was unauthorised and unrecognised by the party’s national leadership.
