Labour Party Faction Calls Obi’s Exit a Boost for the Party

A faction of the Labour Party led by Julius Abure says the defection of Peter Obi from the party brings “liberation” to its members. The group made the claim after the former presidential candidate joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement, Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary for the Abure faction, said the party had been divided for months. According to him, the departure of Obi and some supporters merely recognised a split that had already occurred in practice.

Ifoh said party leaders had previously urged Obi and his loyalists to quit if they could not work with the existing leadership. He said the faction welcomed the formal separation and looked forward to renewing the party’s fortunes.

He added that the party was ready to move on and appealed to Nigerians for another chance in future elections. Ifoh reiterated that the Labour Party remains active and poised to participate in upcoming political contests.
