Lagos Among States at High Risk as Nigeria Faces Severe Flooding in 2025

Lagos is one of 30 states, alongside the Federal Capital Territory, expected to bear the brunt of severe flooding in 2025, potentially affecting thousands of communities across the country.

The projection, released by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), identifies 1,249 communities in 176 local government areas as being in high-risk flood zones. A further 2,187 communities spread across 293 LGAs are expected to experience moderate flooding.

The warning came during the official launch of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook in Abuja on Thursday. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, who presided over the event, described flooding as one of the nation’s most devastating natural threats, intensified by the growing effects of climate change.

Lagos, along with Abia, Benue, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Jigawa, was named among the states most likely to suffer the heaviest impacts in the months ahead. Authorities are expected to begin early mitigation efforts as the rainy season approaches.
