Lagos Government Hails Supreme Court Victory on National Lottery Act
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government has applauded a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in favour of states’ rights to regulate lotteries and gaming activities. The ruling in Suit No. SC/1/2008 nullifies the National Lottery Act, reaffirming the constitutional authority of state governments to oversee such activities within their jurisdictions.

Speaking about the judgement, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described it as a historic win for federalism, the rule of law, and the constitutional autonomy of states.

He stressed that the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) remains the sole regulatory body for lotteries and gaming in the state, committed to ensuring transparent and responsible operations in line with global standards.

While urging all illegal and unlicensed gaming operators to register with the LSLGA immediately or risk prosecution, Mr. Omotoso assured that Lagos will continue to foster a supportive environment for legitimate operators and protect residents from the negative impacts of unregulated gaming.
