Traders at the Alaba Rago Market in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State are demanding compensation from the government following the demolition of the 45-year-old market. The exercise, which began on 17 August and lasted four days, displaced thousands of traders.
The Waziri of Sarkin Alaba Rago, Adamu Katagum, said more than 3,000 shops and about 40 mosques were destroyed. He estimated the total losses at over 20 billion naira, adding that the government had not built any structures in the market since it was first allocated to Northern traders in 1979.

Other traders also expressed anger over what they described as unfair treatment. They said the demolition was carried out without prior notice despite their tax contributions and long-standing support for the ruling party in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Government has not yet issued a statement on the latest demolition, which is the second to affect the market in just over a year.
