Lagos Residents Warned to Brace for Flash Floods Amid Heavy Rains and Dam Release

Lagos residents have been urged to prepare for potential flash floods following last week’s intense rainfall, which occurred on Wednesday and Thursday.

In a statement, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, described the downpour as the heaviest the state has experienced in recent months. He also pointed out that the situation has been worsened by the release of water from the Oyan Dam, leaving the drainage channels unable to discharge effectively into the rivers.

The commissioner called on residents in low-lying areas, particularly those along the Ogun River, to prioritize their safety by relocating to higher ground. He emphasized that more rain is expected in the coming weeks, and proactive measures could help prevent the loss of lives and property.
