LAWMA Tightens Enforcement as Lagos Battles Illegal Waste Dumping

The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has intensified enforcement across the state as concerns grow over indiscriminate waste dumping and rising environmental violations. Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, acknowledged recent pressures on the waste system but insisted the agency remains committed to curbing reckless disposal habits.

He highlighted the danger of illegal dumping in a coastal city like Lagos, warning that refuse thrown into drains fuels flooding, contaminates water sources, and sends plastics into lagoon channels. LAWMA has now adopted an intelligence-led model, combining surveillance, community reporting, and swift prosecution of offenders.

A major black spot in Somolu has been cleared through a joint operation with local councils and security groups. The agency has also expanded radio and social media campaigns, urging residents to embrace responsible waste disposal and report suspicious movement.
