Over 300 Arrested in Lagos Waste Crackdown

Authorities in Lagos have intensified efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, with the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, confirming the arrest of more than 300 individuals in recent weeks.

The agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Folashade Kadiri, said the operation, conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, relied on day and night surveillance to track illegal dumping across the city.

LAWMA’s Managing Director, Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that mobile enforcement teams and intelligence-led patrols were part of a wider strategy to uphold sanitation laws and deter environmental offenders.

Citing Section 82(1) of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, the agency reiterated that dumping waste in unauthorised areas, including roadsides, drains and canals, is prohibited. Offenders risk fines starting from ₦25,000 and possible custodial sentences, as stipulated under Section 109.

Officials say the clampdown will continue as part of efforts to maintain a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
