LP Backs Gov Candidate, Rejects Uzodimma’s Victory

The leadership of the Labour Party yesterday, said it will support the decision of its Imo State governorship candidate, Athan Achonu, to challenge the victory of Governor Hope Uzodimma in court.

Mr. Achonu had earlier rejected the result of Saturday’s election and demanded a cancellation.

He told journalists in his Umulomo country home in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state that the election was fraught with irregularities, vote buying and physical assaults of party agents.

Reacting, the spokesman for the party’s Campaign Organisation, Mr. Yunusa Tanko, said the party was not surprised by the outcome of the poll following the level of harassment and intimidation their supporters were subjected to.

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof Abayomi Fashina, who was the state Returning Officer declared Uzodimma re-elected on Sunday morning at about 10 am after over eight hours of collation of local government results.

Governor Uzodinma polled 540, 308 votes to defeat his closest rivals, PDP’s Anyanwu, who scored 71,503 votes and LP’s Achonu who got 64,081.
