A tragic boat accident occurred early Friday along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of River Niger, claiming multiple lives. Eyewitnesses reported that the boat, owned by one Musa Dangana, was carrying over 200 passengers, including market women and farm labourers, on their way to the Katcha weekly market in Niger State.
The boat capsized, throwing all passengers into the water. As of the time of this report, eight bodies have been recovered, while local divers continue search-and-rescue operations. None of the passengers were reportedly wearing life jackets, a factor believed to have worsened the casualty rate.
This incident comes just months after a similar tragedy on the Muwo Gbajibo River in Niger State, which also resulted in significant loss of life. Preliminary investigations into the latest accident are expected to focus on safety measures and the boat’s capacity.
