NBS Projects Temporary Inflation Spike for December 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics says the December 2025 inflation rate is expected to record a temporary artificial spike due to a reference period adjustment following the rebasing of the Consumer Price Index. The Statistician General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran, disclosed this on Monday at a stakeholder engagement organised by the NBS and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group in Abuja.

Mr Adeniran said the spike would arise from the base effect of December 2024, which was set at 100 during the rebasing exercise. He explained that base effects are a common statistical occurrence when comparing data across periods, adding that the projected rise is purely arithmetic and does not indicate structural changes in the Nigerian economy.

During the presentation, the Director of Prices and Trade at the NBS, Ayo Anthony, said the CPI basket had been expanded to 934 products from 700 to reflect changes in consumption patterns. He said the base effect would not influence inflation figures from January 2026 onward, adding that Nigeria’s December 2025 inflation data will be released later this week.
