The National Human Rights Commission has demanded explanations from the Nigerian Air Force over recent military airstrikes that reportedly killed civilians in parts of northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Tony Ojukwu, described reports of civilian casualties from aerial bombardments as deeply troubling and inconsistent with human rights and humanitarian law standards.
The commission cited recent airstrikes in Yobe, Borno, Niger and Zamfara states, including reports that more than 100 civilians were killed during operations targeting armed groups. While military authorities have denied civilian casualties, local residents and rights groups have called for independent investigations.

The NHRC called for prompt and transparent investigations into the incidents and urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and operational safeguards to prevent further civilian deaths during military operations.
