Niger Governor Insists Preachers Must Submit Sermons for Approval

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State says preachers in the state must submit their sermons for approval before delivering them. Speaking in an interview, he explained that the move was not a ban on evangelism but a measure to prevent messages considered harmful to the public or government.

The governor said security agencies, including the Department of State Services, the Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the military, were involved in monitoring preaching activities. He added that the aim is to guard against indoctrination and incitement.

Earlier, the state’s Director General of Religious Affairs, Umar Farooq, had said that preachers must obtain a licence within two months, after undergoing a screening process. He stated that anyone who wanted to preach must first secure approval from the authorities.
