Nigeria, Africa and UN Push for United Action on Food Insecurity

Nigeria has joined other African countries and the United Nations in calling for coordinated global action to tackle food insecurity. At the United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake in Addis Ababa, leaders emphasised the need for predictable concessional financing to boost agriculture, rural transformation, infrastructure and education across the continent.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing Nigeria at the summit, said the country is deploying modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, geospatial analytics and satellite-driven climate intelligence to enhance its agricultural drive. He noted that food insecurity has become a shared global challenge, stressing the need for African nations to act with unity and determination.

Shettima also highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing institutional reforms, including the implementation of the National Food Systems Transformation Pathway and the Presidential Initiative on Food Security. These efforts, he said, are focused on scaling up the cultivation of staple crops such as maize, rice, cassava and wheat, alongside investments in agro-industrial processing zones.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the summit as an opportunity to renew Africa’s commitment to resilient and inclusive food systems. He and UN Secretary-General António Guterres underscored the link between hunger, climate change and environmental degradation, urging greater alignment between climate finance and food system investments.
