Vice-President Kashim Shettima has announced that trade between Nigeria and China grew to $22.6 billion in 2023, making it one of the highest trade volumes in Africa. Shettima disclosed this during a meeting with a Chinese delegation, led by Zhang Qingwei, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima called for the continuous strengthening of bilateral relations, noting that Nigeria and China have maintained a friendship based on mutual respect and honour since 1971. He expressed satisfaction with the steady growth of trade between the two nations and highlighted China’s significant influence on the global stage.
While reaffirming Nigeria’s support for the ‘One China’ policy and seeking greater collaboration between the two countries in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, VP Shettima described China’s cultural heritage as admirable and emphasised the importance of further engagement in fostering mutual development.

According to the statement, Yu Dunhai, Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, said both countries should support each other politically, highlighting Tinubu’s commitment to economic diversification.
