Nigeria Unveils Proactive Disaster Strategy to Tackle Floods and Climate Shocks

The Federal Government has launched a forward-looking disaster preparedness plan aimed at curbing the impact of flooding and climate-related emergencies across the country.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, unveiled the ‘Anticipatory Action Framework’, a national strategy designed to shift the country’s disaster management posture from reactive response to early intervention.

The new framework is anchored on early warning systems, local community readiness, and pre-arranged funding mechanisms—tools the government says are critical to protecting lives and livelihoods before crises unfold.

A central component of the plan is the creation of a “trigger group” comprising meteorological and emergency response agencies. The team will analyse climate data to generate forecasts up to two weeks in advance, allowing for targeted action ahead of potential disasters.

The Vice President underscored the urgency of the shift, warning that Nigeria loses nearly 5% of its GDP annually due to the limitations of reactive disaster relief efforts. He described the new approach as a necessary evolution in the face of intensifying climate challenges.
