Nnamdi Kanu Trial Resumes as Court Grants Protective Measures for Witnesses

The trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, resumed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, granted the Federal Government’s request for its witnesses to testify behind protective screens due to security concerns. The prosecution presented evidence relating to Kanu’s arrest and alleged subversive activities.

The court heard from a Department of State Services officer, identified as AAA, who claimed he led the team that arrested Kanu at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos, on 14 October 2015. He told the court that Kanu initially resisted arrest and that broadcasting equipment was found in the hotel room.

During his interrogation—played in court—Kanu allegedly admitted to founding Radio Biafra and operating without a licence. He said the station had no Nigerian staff, but was supported globally with coordinators in the US, Russia, Italy, and Sweden. He also explained that the station’s objective was to fight for the rights of marginalised groups in the South East, South South, and parts of Benue and Kogi states.

Kanu insisted he was not involved in violence and had not been linked to any violent act. He stated that freedom fighting is a fundamental right and not a crime, and cited the UN Charter as his basis for pursuing self-determination.
